The National Weather Service forecasts light to moderate snowfall starting late this morning and lasting through Friday morning in south-central South Dakota.
For Mitchell, the NWS predicts snowfall to begin mainly after 9 a.m. today with about 2 inches of accumulation during the day, and another 2 inches tonight and into Friday.
A high near 23 degrees with winds between 10 and 15 mph is forecast for today in Mitchell.
The heaviest snowfall in south central South Dakota is expected to fall south of Interstate 90, where between 5 to 7 inches of snow is possible. In areas north of Interstate 90, between 2 to 4 inches of snow is likely.
The weather service has issued a winter weather advisory through Friday morning for Sanborn, Davison, Hanson, McCook, Hutchinson, Turner, Yankton and Clay counties. Residents of those counties should expect travel difficulties while under the advisory, as blowing snow in the area could create visibilities of a mile or less, the weather service says.
