BROOKINGS (AP) — Nate Wolters scored 28 points to help put South Dakota State in control of the Summit League regular-season title with a 64-55 win over Western Illinois on Saturday.

Wolters, a senior playing in his final home game, was 10 of 16 from the floor for the Jackrabbits (21-7, 12-3), who moved into first place, a half-game ahead of the Leathernecks (19-6, 11-3). SDSU can clinch the No. 1 spot in the conference tournament with a victory at Nebraska-Omaha on Feb. 28.

Jordan Dykstra added 12 points and 10 rebounds for the Jackrabbits, who won their school-record 30th consecutive home game.

IPFW beats South Dakota men 64-51

VERMILLION (AP) — Frank Gaines scored 22 points, grabbed five rebounds and IPFW outscored the Coyotes 36-17 in the first half to put this game away early, defeating South Dakota 64-51 on Saturday night.

Eric Robertson hit a 3-pointer for South Dakota to cut the Mastodons’ lead to four, 17-13, but IPFW responded with a 19-4 run to end the first half. IPFW (12-16, 5-9 Summit) led by as many as 21 points in the second half, scored 30 points in the paint and shot 44.3 percent from the field.

Trevor Gruis had 12 points, Casey Kasperbauer had 11 and Juevol Myles chipped in with 10 for South Dakota (8-18, 4-10), which never led in the contest.

The Coyotes shot a dismal 38 percent from the field, making just 19 of 50 attempts and were only 5 of 17 from 3-point range.

SDSU women beat Western Illinois 61-52

MACOMB, Ill. — South Dakota State’s Ashley Eide became a member of the 1,000 point club in the Jackrabbits’ 61-52 win over Western Illinois Saturday in Summit League basketball action.

The league-leading Jackrabbits are 20-7 overall and 12-2 in The Summit league.

Eide finished with 12 points and Gabrielle Boever had 13 for SDSU, which was 18-of-54 from the field.

SDSU close out the home season Thursday in a 7 p.m. game against Omaha at Frost Arena in Brookings.

South Dakota women fall to Fort Wayne 71-64

FORT WAYNE, Ind. — Polly Harrington had 19 points and Tempestt Wilson had 17 for the University of South Dakota women’s basketball team in a 71-64 loss to Fort Wayne Saturday in a Summit League game.

USD (12-14, 7-6 Summit) trailed by as many as 11 in the first half. The Coyotes were 24-of-50 from the field in the loss.

USD returns home for a 7 p.m. game Thursday at the Dakota Dome in Vermillion.

Three receive track honors

LINCOLN, Neb. — Three Dakota Wesleyan University women earned all-GPAC honors for their performances at the GPAC indoor track and field championships Saturday.

Senior Tamika Irvin and freshman MaKenzie Hageman each earned all-GPAC honors in the 60- and 200-meter dashes. Irvin finished third in both events, while Hageman took fifth in the 60 and eighth in the 200. Hailey Brunke finished eighth in the 5,000-meter run.

Seven Wesleyan wrestlers advance to nationals

FREMONT, Neb. — Seven members of the Dakota Wesleyan University wrestling team qualified for the NAIA national wrestling tournament at the regional north qualifying meet Saturday. Richard Rios (133), Trever DeVestern (157), Dusty Paulsen (149), Kyle Gerlach (157) and Tyler Sarringar (174) each placed in the top four their respective weight class. Rios took second, Paulsen and DeVestern took third and Gerlach and Sarringar each took fourth.

Nick Hutcheson (165) and Eric Gruis (285) were awarded wild-cards and will also be at the national tournament.

The Tigers’ qualifiers will compete at the NAIA national wrestling tournament March 1-2 in Des Moines, Iowa.
