Woonsocket teen gets jail for probation violation

A Woonsocket man who admitted to smoking marijuana while on probation was sentenced Tuesday to 180 days in jail and put on probation for two years.

Benjamin Amadon, 19, pleaded guilty in April to possession with the intent to distribute 1 ounce or less of marijuana and was sentenced in June to two years on probation, 40 days in jail and fined $300.

Judge Tim Bjorkman reimposed the two years of probation from the date of sentencing and gave Amadon credit for the 65 days he has served in jail. Bjorkman ordered Amadon to serve his remaining jail time in segments with 30 days starting July 1, 30 days starting Jan. 1, 2014, 30 days starting July 1, 2014, and 25 days starting Jan. 1, 2015.

Bjorkman also asked Amadon’s court-appointed attorney, Phil Carlson, of Mitchell, to set up a tour of the penitentiary.

“One thing that might surprise you when you go there is that you’re going to see a lot of kids who look like you there,” Bjorkman said.
