The Mitchell Marlins PeeWee A hockey team lost a pair of one-goal games over the weekend at the state hockey tournament, which was held at the Mitchell Activities Center.
Mitchell lost to Sioux Falls West 6-5 in three overtimes Saturday and fell to Aberdeen 1-0 Sunday to earn eighth place in the 11-team field.
“The kids did everything we asked of them,” Mitchell coach Alex Young said. “One bounce one way or another and we could have been in the win column in either of those games.”
Rushmore, the team that defeated Mitchell in the second round, went on to win the PeeWee A state tournament Sunday night with a 2-1 overtime win over Sioux Falls East in the championship game.
Saturday against West, Mitchell’s Tucker Hohn had two goals and two assists. Adam Loes opened the scoring for the Marlins in the first period with a goal, but West took a 2-1 lead heading to the second.
The Marlins outscored West 3-2 in the second period to tie the game at 4. Hohn, Jake Jarman and Drew Kitchens each had a goal.
Hohn scored again in the third, but West answered back to tie the game at 5. West got the deciding goal in the third overtime and went on to take sixth place in the tournament.
Loes and Jarman each had two assists in the overtime loss. Austin Kerr, Jeremiah Schmitz and Alex Bergeson each had one assist.
Mitchell goalie Ben Colwell finished with 49 saves.
“Everyone skated real hard and it wasn’t one guy carrying the team,” Young said. “It was everyone. They definitely played their hearts out against a real tough team.”
Sunday, Aberdeen got the only goal of the game in the second period on a power play.
Mitchell outshot Aberdeen 49-18 in the game. Colewell made 17 saves.
“We just couldn’t get the puck in the net,” Young said. “They rode a hot goalie and beat us.”
Mitchell finished the season 7-13.
