Mitchell sends seven to state tournament; Chamberlain gets six

ABERDEEN — Seven Mitchell High School wrestlers qualified for the state tournament Saturday at the Region 3A tournament.

To qualify, wrestlers needed to finish in the top four of their weight class.

Mitchell’s Trey Hohn (120) and Matt Larson (145) each took second place, Alex Herrick (132), Ethan Parr (138), Tyson Sprinkle (220) and Robert McCardle (285) took third and Ben Kummer (160) took fourth place.

“I’m happy for the kids that got through,” Mitchell coach Travis Carpenter said. “Headed into regions, I thought we could get as few as six to state and as many as 11. I don’t think we overachieved in any way shape or form, but to take seven is a good number.”

As a team, Mitchell came in fourth place with 81.5 points. Pierre, which won the Class A state wrestling title last year, won the region with 212 points. Aberdeen Central took second with 185.5 points and Huron was third at 164. Chamberlain took fifth with 61.5. points.

In the 120-pound championship, Hohn lost to Aberdeen’s Trevor Hieb by fall. Hohn, a junior, defeated Huron’s Jesse Mikrut in the semifinals 5-0.

“He wrestled a good semifinals match,” Carpenter said. “We’ve struggled with Hieb this year. It’s one of those things where we have to go to work this week and hopefully get some confidence headed into state.”

Larson, who returned to the lineup after missing a couple of weeks because of a head injury, lost to Aberdeen’s Mitchell Johnson 13-3 in the championship. Larson pinned his first opponent and defeated Pierre’s A.J. Dorschner 4-3 in the semifinals.

“He wrestled a smart match in the semifinals against the Pierre kid,” Carpenter said. “We’ve beaten him three out of four times this year. In the finals, we just got a little out-physicaled.”

Mitchell’s Briggs Havlik (106) went 1-2 with a win by fall over Chamberlain’s Hunter Eimers. Noah Taylor (170), Preston Skinner (182) and Riley Heck (195) all went 0-2.

Chamberlain qualified six to state, including 132-pound Russell Felicia’s second-place finish. Felicia lost to Pierre’s Tanner Monfore 3-2 in the championship match.

Spencer Kirkpatrick (113) and Logan Pickner (120) each took third place and Tyler Myers (182), Nick Claussen (195) and Austin Cheney (285) took fourth place.

Eimers (106), Jim Bob Ellsworth (126), Nathan Powell (138), Matt Hauke (145), Lucas Daly (160) and Tyler Myers (182) each went 0-2.

The Class A state tournament is held Friday and Saturday in Watertown.
