Everson, Tate among 14 to be inducted to SDHSCA Hall

Fourteen individuals, including five with ties to the Mitchell area, are being inducted to the South Dakota High School Coaches Association Hall of Fame, it was announced recently.

John Gilman, a Parkston resident and director of the hall of fame, announced that seven will be honored in Watertown and seven in Aberdeen at the state wrestling tournaments Feb. 22-23.

In Watertown, Doyle Everson and Andy Tate, both who are connected to the Mitchell High School wrestling team, will be honored.

Everson was a three-time state champion for the Kernels from 1980 to 1982 and a four-time national tournament qualifier for Northern. He was a head coach at Miller, Douglas and Newell and is now a longtime official.

Tate wrestled for Huron and Huron College. He coached at Parkston and Mitchell. When he was with Mitchell, his teams won five state titles, including four in a row from 1995 to 1998. He coached 30 state champions.

In Aberdeen, Bon Homme graduate Hannon Hisek, Wagner’s Brad Lhotak and Freeman’s Cory Wallman will be honored.

Hisek wrestled for Bon Homme from 1993 to 1998 and was a five-time state champion with a career record of 237-7. He was a six-time region champion and six time district champion.

Lhotak was a three-time state champion and coached at Sioux Valley for 11 years.

Wallman wrestled for Freeman and won four state titles in 1992-95. He was 50-0 with 48 pins in his senior year.

Others inducted in Watertown will be Les Sigman, of Sturgis; Eric Hauan, of Sturgis; Chet Jones, an official; Alan Lawrence, of Mobridge; and Jerry Hirrschoff, an official.

Others inducted in Aberdeen are Bob Tiff, radio announcer; Mark Wiley, of Webster; Stan Steffensen, of Lake Preston; and Ray Geditz, coach at Ipswich.
