SD House approves scholarships for home-schooled students

The Opportunity Scholarship is given to high school students who receive a 24 on their ACT test and take a rigorous course load.

PIERRE (AP) — The South Dakota House has approved a bill to help home-schooled students receive scholarship money from the state.

The Opportunity Scholarship is given to high school students who receive a 24 on their ACT test and take a rigorous course load. Starting in July, students who don't meet the course load requirements will be able to receive the scholarship with a 28 on the ACT.

Advocates for home-schooled students complained that the change was unfair because those students could not meet the course standards. They proposed a bill that would keep the ACT minimum score at 24.

The media reports the bill fell one vote short of passage, but was revived and passed Thursday after the minimum ACT score for home-schooled students was set at 26.
