SALEM — A two-vehicle crash near Salem Thursday evening resulted in two citations but no injuries, according to the South Dakota Highway Patrol.
Trooper Matthew Petersen said Michael Hofer, 27, Freeman, was driving a 2000 International semi, pulling an empty livestock trailer, south on U.S. 81 near milepost 55, south of Salem, when another vehicle, a 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix driven by Devin Stevens, 18, of Madison, swerved into his lane. The trooper said the Grand Prix scraped all the way down the side of the semi-trailer, causing damage to the trailer. Stevens’ vehicle was a total loss, Petersen said.
Peterson said Stevens admitted he was looking away from the road, and was cited for careless driving and for not wearing a seat belt.
“He got very lucky,” Petersen said.
