PIERRE — Legislators are debating restoring state funding for county veterans services officers.

Approximately $168,000 was cut during the budget crisis several years ago. The state’s match of $1 for every $4 by the county would be resumed under HB 1249. Rep. Lance Carson, R-Mitchell, said the county offices are probably the first line of contact when veterans come home. Said Rep. Spencer Hawley, D-Brookings, “This is a great bill.” Hawley, a 30-year member of the National Guard, brought a bill last year. “The answer was, ‘Not yet,’ ” he said. The House voted for it 69-0 Wednesday. The bill now goes to the Senate.
