A Minnesota man admitted Tuesday to violating multiple terms of his probation. Ian Chapman, 21, admitted he missed several appointments with his probation officer, failed to complete a chemical dependency evaluation, drank alcohol and tested positive for cocaine while on probation.
Chapman received a suspended imposition in 2010 from Judge Tim Bjorkman and was put on probation after being convicted of possession of a controlled substance. A suspended imposition of sentence gives offenders the opportunity to keep a clear record if they follow all terms of probation. Chapman now faces a maximum of 10 years in prison.
Chapman requested a bond adjustment so he can be released from jail. Bjorkman denied the request.
“I gave you the opportunity to avoid having a felony on your record,” Bjorkman said. “It’s pretty clear to me, by your own admission, that you thumbed your nose at the state of South Dakota and the court system, and that it was a mistake to give you a suspended imposition.”
