SIOUX CENTER, Iowa — Rebounding was the key statistic to Dakota Wesleyan University men’s basketball coach Shane Murphy after his team lost to No. 15 Dordt 79-69 Wednesday.

Wesleyan was outrebounded 43-26 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference game. In the loss, the Tigers got nine rebounds for forward Jalen Voss, but no other player had more than four boards.

“At the end of the day, it’s tough to look at the one stat on the rebounding side,” Murphy said. “That’s probably what cost us to not be able to get a huge win on the road.”

DWU, which never led in the game and trailed by three at halftime, was led by Aireus Stephenson’s 21 points. Carde Pennington had 10 points off the bench and Bo LaCroix had nine.

The Tigers had only eight turnovers and shot 29-of-59 from the field, but fell to 13-14 overall and 8-9 in the league.

Dordt was led by Cliff Warner and Jordan Vogel’s 17 points. Vogel had a game-high 13 rebounds for the Defenders, who finished with 16 offensive rebounds as a team.

“I felt like we were getting what we wanted on the offensive end, but we gave so many extra possessions with offensive boards,” Murphy said.

The Tigers play Nebraska Wesleyan at 4 p.m. Saturday in a GPAC game in their next action.
