Catching up: Mitchell Christian's Lemon earns UMAC honor

Crown College freshman and Mitchell Christian graduate Scott Lemon was one of four men’s soccer players at Crown to be named to earn Upper Midwest Athletic Conference academic all-conference, it was announced Friday by the league.

Crown College finished the season just shy of making the UMAC playoffs at 6-11-2 (5-7-2 UMAC).

- Stickney graduate Luke Hauert posted his third straight NCAA qualifying time in the 60-meter hurdles for the Northern State men’s track and field team at the MSU Open in Mankato, Minn., on Jan. 26. Hauert, a senior, finished with a time of 8.13 seconds in the preliminaries of the event and went on to win the event in the finals with a time of 8.14 seconds. Hauert’s fastest finish of the season was in the Wolves’ opener when Hauert posted a time of 8.11 seconds, which ranks second in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.

NSU competes again when it travels to the NDSU Bison Invite Saturday in Fargo, N.D.

- Northern State true freshman Devon Brecke scored seven points and grabbed three rebounds in 30 minutes of action for the Wolves in a 60-46 win over Upper Iowa on Saturday in Fayette, Iowa.

The former Wagner Red Raider has started 10 games for the Wolves this season, averaging 6.9 points and 3.5 rebounds. NSU (14-6, 10-6 NSIC) tips off again Friday when it hosts Winona State University and again on Saturday when it takes on Augustana in conference action at Wachs Arena in Aberdeen.

- Colorado State junior and former Parkston standout Alex Muntefering placed fourth in the men’s mile run at the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational at the Devaney Center Saturday in Lincoln, Neb. Muntefering finished the event with a time of 4:08.24.

The Rams compete again on Friday and Saturday when they travel to Seattle, Wash., for the Husky Invitational.

- Wagner native Jilanne Doom placed sixth in the women’s 3,000-meter run for the University of South Dakota women’s track and field team at the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational Saturday in Lincoln, Neb. Doom, a sophomore for the Coyotes, finished the race with a time of 10:41.09. USD competes again on Friday and Saturday when it travels to Ames, Iowa for the Iowa State Classic.

- Hanson graduate Brigitte Gross earned Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference women’s indoor track and field athlete of the week honors, the conference announced Tuesday. Gross, a redshirt junior for the Cougars, received the honor after getting fourth place in the pole vault at the Frank Sevigne Invitational on Saturday with a height of 13-05.25. Gross is currently ranked first in the NSIC and third in NCAA Division II and is the only vaulter in the NSIC that has automatically qualified for the 2013 NCAA indoor national championships.
