An update is needed at the Mitchell High School weight room, a group agreed at a meeting Monday.
The group, which included MHS coaches and community members, toured the room and discussed its vision of improvements.
“Everybody came to a consensus that the equipment needed to be updated,” said Mike Mohr, a member of the committee. “Nothing is set in stone right now, but we will meet again.”
The committee is meeting again at 7 p.m. Monday.
The proposed plan to improve the current MHS weight room will cost an estimated $80,000, according to MHS Activities Director Geoff Gross.
“I was excited about how many people were at the meeting and that wanted to be involved in this project,” Gross said. “School budgets are very tight and we have a substantial amount of money that needs to be fundraised so community engagement will be important.”
The school is looking at four manufacturing companies for the equipment. Those companies are Rogers Athletic, Powerlift, “Bigger, Faster, Stronger” and Com-Fit. The group would like the equipment ordered by mid-April and fully installed by June 1. Specific fundraising plans were not set, but the group will talk about the issue at a later meeting.
“Everything is dependent on the success of the fundraising campaign,” Mitchell football coach Kent VanOverschelde said. “We would like to be in a position where this project is completed by June 1. A thing that was understood at our meeting was that this isn’t just for one program, it was for all of the students at our high school.”
