Mitchell boys fall to Spearfish 66-55

SPEARFISH — The Mitchell Kernel boys’ basketball team fell to Spearfish 66-55 Saturday.

“Our free throw shooting was the difference,” said Mitchell coach Tom Young, whose team went 10-of-19 at the foul line. “That was the really big key in the game.”

Young said his starters — Cole Morgan, Jared Schmidt, Zach Moen, Beau Brown and Evan Mastel — did a good job early in the game.

“They played defense well in the first half,” said Young, whose team trailed 25-23 at halftime. “But it seems like we usually have a quarter that we have a hard time scoring in.”

The Spartans held the Kernels to just seven points in the third quarter. Mitchell, which was 19-of-39 from the field and 7-of-18 in 3-pointers, outscored Spearfish in the fourth but the third-quarter deficit was too much to overcome.

The Kernels were led by Morgan and Brown with 17 points apiece. Mastel brought down four of the team’s 16 rebounds.

Spearfish’s Dillon Orth led all players with 24 points. Brandon Kemp scored 10 points and Blaine Bacon had a game-high 10 rebounds. The Spartans were 19-of-44 from the field and grabbed 38 rebounds.

The Kernels return home to host Watertown at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Corn Palace in Mitchell.
