Chamberlain High School senior Jami Walters has committed to Northern State University’s football team, it was announced recently.

Walters will sign a letter of intent Wednesday to join the Wolves this fall. He is a 6-foot-2, 250-pound defensive lineman who was an all-state selection as a punter, once as a first-team selection and once as honorable mention.

As a junior, he had 65 tackles and had 60 tackles as a senior.

Today’s girls’ game is booster club event

Today’s Mitchell High School girls’ basketball game is a booster club event.

Anyone with a membership card will earn free admittance when showing it at the door.

DWU wrestling team cancels dual vs. Jamestown

The Dakota Wesleyan University wrestling team has canceled its dual against Jamestown College, it was announced Friday.

The nonconference dual was scheduled Wednesday in Mitchell, but DWU head coach Matt Sedivy said both teams are dealing with injuries.

DWU is in action today at the Briar Cliff open in Sioux City, Iowa.

Wesleyan’s Beck earns CoSIDA academic honor

Dakota Wesleyan University sophomore Celeste Beck earned CoSIDA academic all-district honors for the District 6 College Division, it was announced Friday.

Beck, a guard for the Tiger women’s basketball team, is a biology major and holds a 3.8 GPA. She’s the only women’s basketball player in the Great Plains Athletic Conference to earn the honor.

To be eligible, student-athletes must be sophomores or older with a 3.3 GPA and a starter or important reserve for the team.

DWU hosts Midland University at 2 p.m. today for the annual Pink the Palace game, which is to support breast cancer awareness.

Former DWU linebacker to play football in Europe

Former Dakota Wesleyan University linebacker Mike Barnaud is traveling to Europe to begin a one-year career with the Lubeck Seals, a professional football team in Lubeck, Germany.

Barnaud graduated from DWU in December, and he will travel to Germany April 26 to start practice with the Seals.

The season starts in May and runs through October.

Barnaud is a Belle Fourche native. He was a two-time all-Great Plains Athletic Conference linebacker for the Tigers.

Marlin boys lose to Canadian team

DULUTH, Minn. — The Marlin boys’ varsity team was defeated by Fort Francis, Ontario, 9-6 during the Duluth tournament Friday.

The Marlins led going into the final period but weren’t able to hold the lead.

“We had a bad defensive breakdown within the first two minutes of the third,” Mitchell coach John Lord said.

Ben Hogan scored two goals and Jacob Cersosimo, Mitch Berens, Jordan Grosdidier and Alex Thill each scored one goal in the loss.

Tate Sutherland and Weston Gauger shared time in the net for Mitchell.

Mitchell plays at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. today in the 16-team tournament in Duluth, Minn.

Marlin girls fall to Sioux Falls 8-4

Kassi Barington recorded a hat trick but the Mitchell Marlin girls’ varsity team lost to Sioux Falls 8-4 Friday at the Mitchell Activities Center.

Barington scored her first goal in the first period but the Flyers came back in the second period, scoring four goals. Sioux Falls outscored Mitchell 4-3 in the final period of the game.

Jacey Brunsen also scored a goal for the Marlins and Ashley Murtha, Bailey Hohn, Alexandra Jones, Karissa Beck and Kylie Barington each had an assist in the loss.

Mitchell (5-8-3) had 20 shots on goal and goalie Hannah Spates made 17 saves.
