A. According to Jay Vogt, director of the South Dakota State Historical Society, legislation was passed in 1994 to allow $100,000 in gambling revenue to be used by the state in the form of historic preservation grants.
“The thought was that the Deadwood Historic Preservation Commission gets about $6.8 million a year that the city of Deadwood uses for preservation in that town already, and that $100,000 could be used to spur preservation all across the state,” Vogt said. “That was something that was not in the original gambling ballot question but was passed later to help preserve historic sites all across the state.”
According to the Deadwood Historic Preservation Commission website, that group also gives grants for historic preservation outside of Deadwood.
