RAPID CITY (AP) — Police in Rapid City say a 22-year-old man is in critical condition after he likely spent the night lying in the snow next to his car after it crashed into an apartment building.
The media reports that Matthew Burgard appeared to be suffering from hypothermia when police discovered him in the snow shortly before 6 a.m. Friday.
No one was home in the apartment that was hit.
Police don't know if Burgard was thrown from the vehicle or crawled from the wreck. Police believe the crash happened around 1 a.m., as a resident reported hearing a loud noise at that time.
Assistant police chief Karl Jegeris says Burgard is lucky it wasn't the night before when temperatures were below zero and the wind was blowing.
