Kiwanis spaghetti feed set Saturday

It’s a tasty way to help the community, according to Mitchell Kiwanis Club President Terry Johnson.

The club’s annual spaghetti feed is set for noon to 7 p.m. Saturday at the James Valley Community Center, 300 W. First Ave.

It’s the club’s biggest fundraiser of the year. Adult tickets are $6 in advance or $6.50 at the door. Children 10 and younger are served for free. Tickets are available at the Mitchell Area Chamber of Commerce, Coborn’s or County Fair Food Store.

The spaghetti feed and an annual 12 and under baseball tournament, set for June 1-2 this year, are the Kiwanis Club’s main events each year, Johnson said.

“The spaghetti feed is our major fundraiser of the year. About 25-30 Kiwanis members volunteer for the project,” he said. “For the last three to four years, some of the girls from the Abbott House have come to volunteer and help with the spaghetti feed.”

The club’s projects include making dresses out of pillowcases for girls in Africa, a pilot program with an elementary school called BUGS (Bring Up Your Grades), blankets for Abbott House residents, safety books for fourth graders and high school scholarships, Johnson said.

The Kiwanis contributes to the United Way, 4-H, youth baseball, RSVP Reading Program, Junior Achievement, and provides team shirts for Mitchell Parks and Recreation teams and other needs that are brought to the board.

It’s also involved in an international mission called ELIMINATE maternal/neonatal tetanus. Statistically, every nine minutes a baby dies due to tetanus, but for $1.80 people can save or protect a woman and her future babies, Johnson said.

The club is also working with Schwan’s for a fundraising campaign to raise money toward this project. Customers can place an order at the spaghetti feed and pick up the order on Feb. 23 at the Fifth and Rowley parking lot from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Schwan’s will give a percentage to the Kiwanis Club for this project.

In addition, the club is seeking new members, Johnson said. The Mitchell Kiwanis Club meets at noon every Wednesday at the Depot for lunch and a meeting. People interested in joining are welcome to attend. The club also has a Facebook page that offers more information.
