GREGORY — The Gregory High School basketball teams look to jump down a class in the South Dakota High School Activities Association’s proposed athletic classifications for the next two-year cycle, released Thursday.
The classifications will not be finalized until the SDHSAA board of directors meet Feb. 27.
Gregory Athletic Director Sherrie Kafka said the change will be good for the school’s programs.
“We’ve always been one of the smallest Class A teams,” she said, adding she couldn’t recall a time when the Gorillas were not in Class A. “and now the shoes reverse. I think it will level out the playing field a little bit.”
Kafka said Gregory’s schedule is unlikely to change in great strides because it is in the Southeastern South Dakota Conference, which is made up of mostly Class A schools.
Gorillas boys’ basketball head coach Jeff Determan said the change will allow the competitive programs to have success on a more consistent basis year in and year out.
“There’s always that one or two years that you could have a good team and compete at that high level, but more consistently it will be a good move for us,” Determan said.
