SIOUX CITY, Iowa — Turnovers proved costly as the Dakota Wesleyan women’s basketball team fell to No. 6 Morningside University 78-71 Wednesday in Sioux City, Iowa.

DWU (17-8, 8-7 GPAC) tied the game at 65 with 3 minutes to play but missed baskets and turnovers allowed the Mustangs to end the game on a 13-6 run.

“You have to take care of the basketball against a team like this, especially on the road,” DWU head coach Jason Christensen, whose team committed 21 turnovers to Morningside’s 16. “But you have to give the kids credit. They were behind early in the second half and battled back and we had our chances.”

The Mustangs (21-4, 13-3 GPAC) controlled the paint, outscoring the Tigers 34-18 under the basket. Shelby Beaudette scored 18 points, Ashleyn Muhl and Hanna Blum had 14 points apiece and Jessia Tietz finished with 10 for Morningside, which shot 46 percent from the field.

The Tigers were led by Kim Johnson, who had a game-high 19 points and team-high nine rebounds. Katie Johnson and Amanda Hart, who made four 3-pointers, each scored 16 points and Celeste Beck added 10 points for the Tigers.

DWU shot 46 percent from the field, 35 percent from behind the arc and 85 percent from the foul line.

The Tigers return home to host Midland University in a GPAC game at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Corn Palace in Mitchell.
