MCS boys lose to MV/P 71-60

PLANKINTON — The Mount Vernon/Plankinton boys’ basketball team outscored Mitchell Christian 28-11 in the third quarter and went on to win 71-60 Tuesday in Plankinton.

“We came out kind of flat in the third,” Mitchell Christian coach Dennis Martin said. “I was proud of the way our guys fought back in the fourth but we dug too big of a hole.”

The Eagles made a run in the final quarter, outscoring the Titans 22-14 but weren’t able to complete the comeback.

Turnovers hurt Mitchell Christian, which was without starters Aaron Lemon and Ethan Cooper due to knee injuries, as it had 23 to the Titans’ 11.

Mount Vernon/Plankinton (9-5) had four players score in double figures with Nick Lawson and Jared Long scoring 18 points apiece. Deric Denning and Tate Deinert each had 11 points in the win and Deinert brought down a team-high five rebounds of the team’s 20.

The Titans shot 28-of-57 from the field, 7-of-21 from behind the arc and 8-of-16 from the free-throw line. The Eagles were 24-of-36 from the field and 11-of-20 from the foul line.

Chandler Nelson and Wes VanderPol each scored 21 points and Adam Rasmussen added 12 points for Mitchell Christian.

Mitchell Christian plays at Menno at 8 p.m. Thursday, while the Titans host Harrisburg Tuesday.
