BROOKINGS — The Brookings boys’ basketball team limited the Kernels to four points in the fourth quarter to pull away for a 60-47 win in an Eastern South Dakota Conference game Tuesday at Bob Jostad Gymnasium.

“I think fourth-quarter fatigue set in,” Mitchell coach Tom Young said. “We did have three or four offensive possessions where we actually had a pretty good look, but we just didn’t make them. On the other end, Brookings had some nice plays and ended up shooting four out of their last five shots were two-footers, either off offensive rebounds or nice cuts to the basket.

“You have to give (Brookings) credit. I think the Nagy kid really makes the other kids go and he did a good job of penetrating and finding (the open man).”

The Bobcats seemed in control with a 37-25 halftime lead and still led 44-34 with 4:51 to play in the third, before Mitchell put together a 9-0 run over the next four minutes to pull within a point.

Beau Brown, who had a game-high 21 points, drove through the Brookings defense and pulled up to score in the lane to start the run and then Cole Morgan’s 3-pointer made it a four-point game.

Brown knocked down 4 of 5 free throws, including three straight after being fouled on a three-point attempt and the Kernels were within 44-43 with 1:08 to play in the third quarter.

But that would be the last time the numbers moved in Mitchell’s column on the scoreboard until Jared Schmidt knocked down a three with only 1:33 to play in the game.

Meanwhile, Brookings got its offensive rhythm back and scored its first three hoops of the fourth quarter in the paint as Kaleb Vig sandwiched a pair of baskets around a Zach Kress two-footer.

Braxton Carlson pushed the Bobcat lead back to double digits when Konner Beste penetrated and dished off for the easy basket to make it 54-43, before a pair of Tyler Nagy free throws finished off the 12-0 run that spanned the final minute of the third quarter and nearly six minutes of the fourth.

Brown added four rebounds, two assists and a pair of steals. Morgan and Schmidt finished with nine and eight points, respectively, as the Kernels fell to 3-11 on the season and 1-9 in the ESD.

Carlson scored 19 points and pulled down six rebounds as the Bobcats had four players scored in double digits.

Vig scored 11 while Beste and Nagy dropped 10 apiece while Zach Page had a game-high of seven rebounds and four assists.

Brookings travels to Brandon Valley on Thursday while Mitchell is at Sturgis on Friday and Spearfish on Saturday.
