SIOUX FALLS — Sophomore Abby Sudbeck won first for the Mitchell powerlifting team in the girls’ white division at the Sioux Falls O’Gorman Invite Saturday.
In three lifts, Sudbeck totaled 630 pounds. Her coefficient, which divides total pounds lifted by the person’s body weight, was 3.877.
Mitchell had six competitors at the event, which had teams from South Dakota and Iowa. One of Mitchell’s coaches, Arend Kuyper, said about 100 to 120 kids competed.
Kuyper was proud his team scored 15 points. It was the first time in five years of competing at the event Mitchell scored any team points. Kuyper said Mitchell did not place in the top three, which are the only team placings awarded.
“A lot of these kids are young and their hard work is starting to pay off,” he said. “I’m really proud of the kids.”
At 123 pounds, Gramm Johnson, a junior, took third place and had a total weight of 625 pounds. His coefficient was 5.239. Freshman Austin Getty took ninth place at 165 pounds with 750 pounds lifted, and a coefficient of 4.950.
Micah Hettinger, a junior, placed fourth at 181 pounds with 1,105 pounds and a coefficient of 6.170. Mitch Johnson, a sophomore, placed eighth with 930 pounds and a coefficient of 5.410. At 220 pounds, junior Andrew Getty placed third with 1,010 pounds. His coefficient was 4.858.
