The National Weather Service early Monday issued advisories for freezing rain and wintry weather in eastern North Dakota, and parts of eastern South Dakota. The rain was forecast to turn to snow later in the day, with heavy amounts possible in some areas.
Problems continued Tuesday morning as a sheet of ice formed on roadways under snow that fell overnight Monday.
One miles east of Alexandria, on Interstate 90, a semi could be seen jack-knifed in the median Tuesday morning.
Several area schools also started late because of the road conditions.
Crashes and vehicles in the ditch were reported in eastern South Dakota early Monday as well. A chain-reaction crash on state Highway 11 between Sioux Falls and Canton involved eight vehicles, but no one was hurt.
