Avera donates $300,000 to DWU

Dakota Wesleyan University’s Corrigan Health Sciences Center is now fully funded, thanks to a gift from Avera Queen of Peace Hospital.
Avera has committed $300,000 to the project, according to Tom Clark, hospital CEO. The gift will name the lecture hall and lobby in the new facility.
“The university is a tremendous asset to this community and we have a long history of partnership with them,” said Clark during an afternoon announcement at DWU’s Wagner Chapel in the Sherman Center at DWU.
“A large percentage of our nursing staff comes from their program, so it is important that we support its growth and development,” he said. “DWU provides outstanding graduates which allow us to hire great clinical staff. These jobs also serve as an economic engine for this community. Everyone wins.”
DWU praised Avera for the generosity.
“Our nurses, athletic trainers and athletes benefit from our strong relationship with Avera Queen of Peace,” said Bob Duffett, president of DWU. “This gift is a great vote of confidence in our health care education programs. We are truly committed to educating the best future medical professionals in the region.”
The new four-story, 48,000-square-foot science building will contain chemistry, biology and physics labs; two undergraduate research labs equipped with state-of-the-art equipment for student use; four nursing simulation labs; classrooms for nursing, athletic training, the sciences and mathematics; and faculty offices.
Construction for the building began in 2011 following the announcement of two $5 million gifts to the university. The gifts, from Paul and Donna Christen, Huron, and Fritz and Glenda Corrigan, Edina, Minn., along with a memorial gift from Ron Gates Sr., to name the nursing department, were instrumental in kicking off the construction of the $11.5 million project.
“The Mitchell community has been generous to this project,” said Theresa Kriese, vice president for business and advancement at DWU. “In addition to our initial large gifts, we have received several gifts to name labs and classrooms, and we look forward to recognizing all of our major donors when we dedicate the building in the fall.”
The new health sciences building will officially open in fall 2013. The dedication for the building is scheduled for Aug. 29.
