Howard, Parkston win wrestling tournaments titles over weekend

In high school wrestling action, two local teams won tournament championships Saturday.

Howard won the Parker Invitational, while Parkston claimed the Wagner Invitational.

Howard had four individual champions en route to scoring 214.5 points, which topped second-place Marshall, Minn., which had 197 points.

Bailey Neises (113), Luke Loudenburg (120), Tanner Henkel (152) and James Jungwirth (170) each won championships in their weight class for the Tigers.

In Wagner, Parkston cruised to the team championship with 257 points.

Tri-Valley came in second with 68 points.

Parkston’s Blake Bietz (113), Weslee Dvorak (145), Brady Reiff (220) and Austin Bertram (285) each won individual titles for the Trojans.

MHS wrestling team places five at Brookings tournament

BROOKINGS — Five Mitchell High School wrestlers placed in the top eight at the Les Tlustos wrestling invitational Saturday.

The Kernels came in 14th place as a team with 59.5 points. Rapid City Central won the event with 229 points and Pierre took second with 217.

Mitchell’s Ethan Parr (138) and Tyson Sprinkel (220) each took fourth place, which was the highest finish for the Kernels.

Robert McCardle (285) took fifth, Trey Hohn (120) was seventh and Josh Dipippo (132) was eighth.

Mitchell is back in action Friday when it duals against Eastern South Dakota Conference rival Watertown at 7:30 p.m. at Watertown Arena.

Marlin girls fall to Watertown 4-2

WATERTOWN — Mitchell scored two second-period goals but fell to Watertown 4-2 in a girls’ varsity hockey game Saturday.

Haley Stahl and Kylie Barington each got a goal for the Marlins, who are now 5-7-3 on the season. Cassidy Stuckey and Bailey Hohn each had an assist.

Mitchell trailed 2-0 after the first period, but Stahl’s goal got the Marlins within one. Watertown took a 3-1 lead and Barington pulled Mitchell within one again headed into the third period.

Goalie Hannah Spates made 22 saves for Mitchell, which is in sixth place in the eight-team league.

Mitchell is in action next at 8:30 p.m. Friday against Sioux Falls at the Mitchell Activities Center.

South Dakota State beats NDSU

BROOKINGS (AP) — Nate Wolters scored 26 points and grabbed seven rebounds, helping South Dakota State rally past North Dakota State in the second half Saturday for a 69-53 victory.

Wolters, who became the first SDSU player to score 2,000 career points in a 59-53 win at Western Illinois on Thursday, was 7 of 16 from the floor, including three 3-pointers. Tony Fiegen and Jordan Dykstra added 14 points apiece for the Jackrabbits (16-6, 7-2 Summit League).

USD women win fourth straight

INDIANAPOLIS — The South Dakota women’s basketball team won its fourth straight game Saturday.

The Coyotes defeated IUPUI 76-56 to improve to 11-10 overall and 6-2 in the Summit League.

Tempestt Wilson scored a career-high 26 points on 12-of-16 shooting, Nicole Seekamp added 16 points and Margaret McCloud added 10.

Katie Comello led IUPUI (11-9, 5-3) in scoring with 14 points.

The Coyotes play hosts to in-state rival South Dakota State 7 p.m. Wednesday at the DakotaDome in Vermillion.

SDSU wins 15th game of season

OMAHA — The South Dakota State University women’s basketball team defeated Omaha 74-64 Saturday.

The Jackrabbits improved to 15-6 overall and 7-1 in the Summit League with help the help of four players who scored in double-figures.

Megan Waytashek led the way for SDSU with 11 points, while Hannah Strop, Gabrielle Boever and Katie Lingle each scored 10.

SDSU hits the court at 7 p.m. Wednesday against in-state rival University of South Dakota in Vermillion.
