LETTER: Write to congressional reps about gun control
The gun lobby is trying to scare citizens into thinking that President Obama wants to get rid of the Second Amendment; That is not true.By: Gordon Plowe & Betty Plowe , Mitchell
To the Editor:
Now it’s up to us: The readers of The Daily Republic, all the people of South Dakota and citizens across the country. Vice President Joe Biden has reported the recommendations of his committee to the president. President Obama has reported to the American people what he recommends as changes to be made to protect our children and the thousands of other citizens killed by guns each year. We the people must now speak out to our members of the House of Representatives so they take appropriate action.
Here in South Dakota, we need to write to Rep. Kristi Noem, our only representative. The Daily Republic has a daily circulation of about 11,500. What if just one-half of us readers sent letters to Congresswoman Noem next week? I think she would take notice and do the right thing for South Dakota and the country.
Here is a copy of the letter my wife and I sent to Rep. Noem:
“Dear Congresswoman Noem:
We are supporters of the Second Amendment for gun owners who are hunters and other responsible citizens. The gun lobby is trying to scare citizens into thinking that President Obama wants to get rid of the Second Amendment; That is not true.
“The president, with the input of the Vice President Joe Biden committee, wants to put reasonable controls in place to protect and prevent the killing of children and the thousands of innocent citizens who are killed by guns each year with safeguards such as: background checks for all gun buyers; ban high-capacity ammunition clips, either 10 or the seven voted by NYS; reinstate the assault weapons ban; prohibit the possession of armor piercing ammunition; increase penalties for gun trafficking; appropriate approximately $4 billion to help communities keep 15,000 police officers on duty.
“As your constituents we urge you to support these safeguards and do all in your power to influence your colleagues in the House of Representatives to do the same.
Thank you for doing the right thing for the people of South Dakota and our country.”
