Man’s condition improving following self-inflicted gunshot

A Mitchell man who apparently suffered an intentional self-inflicted gunshot wound Thursday night is in fair condition at a Sioux Falls hospital, authorities say.

The man, whose name authorities have not released, was still in an intensive care unit Friday at a Sioux Falls hospital, but is responsive and aware of his surroundings, according to Mitchell Police Detective Lt. Don Everson.

The Mitchell Police Division went to 1220 E. Havens Ave., Lot No. 197, at 7:24 p.m. Thursday after a 911 call alerted police of the incident. The man was reportedly in critical condition that night.

Everson said there are “other circumstances” related to the shooting that are still under investigation, but declined to provide further details. More information may be released next week, he said.
