Fire knocks out power in downtown Sioux Falls

Xcel Energy says more than 500 customers were affected by the outage that happened shortly after 4:30 a.m. Friday.

SIOUX FALLS (AP) — Officials are investigating the cause of an underground fire that knocked out electrical power in downtown Sioux Falls.

Xcel Energy says more than 500 customers were affected by the outage that happened shortly after 4:30 a.m. Friday. By mid-morning about 200 customers remained in the dark. The utility was sending more workers from the Twin Cities in Minnesota to help with repairs.

The incident blew off manhole covers, buckled a sidewalk and sent smoke pouring into the streets. The media reported that the fire was traced to underground electrical equipment. Firefighters extinguished the blaze by 7 a.m.

Many downtown businesses closed because of the outage, and traffic was routed around the area.
