Despite being without two of its top wrestlers, the Mitchell wrestling team came away with a win Thursday night.
The Kernels, who were without junior Alex Herrick and sophomore Matt Larson due to injuries, got their second dual win of the season after defeating Chamberlain 54-20 in the second match of a double dual. In the first match of the night, the Kernels fell to Brookings 51-18 in an Eastern South Dakota Conference matchup.
“I have been trying to emphasize competing, wanting to win, desire and a little bit of a pride-type of scenario, but we are not there yet,” Mitchell coach Travis Carpenter said. “We need more rest. All night long, we didn’t wrestle very well.”
Two individuals who did were Ethan Parr and Tyson Sprinkle.
A junior, Sprinkle won his first match by pin over Brookings’ Aaron Eggebrecht and his second win was by major decision over Austin Cheney, of Chamberlain.
“I think I could have wrestled my second match a little better,” said Sprinkle, who defeated Cheney 14-1 at 220 pounds. “I think I did pretty good on the night, but it would have been nice to get the fall or the tech fall in the last one.”
While Sprinkle put his stamp on the higher weight classes, Parr (138) made his mark on the lower weight classes.
The sophomore won his first match against Ty Johnson, of Brookings, by fall, and took his second match versus Chamberlain’s Nathan Powell by major decision to record his 18th and 19th victories of the season.
Parr is now one win behind sophomore heavyweight Robert McCardle for the team lead in wins. McCardle earned his 20th victory after pinning Zach Ristau, of Chamberlain.
“Ethan has been wrestling well for us all year … he has some work to do,” Carpenter said. “He likes to wrestle on his feet and we’ve got to get better on the mat with him, and that’s what we have been working on. But for him to come out and get two wins, that’s awesome.”
Preston Skinner (182) also won two matches. The sophomore pinned Brookings’ Edie Miller in his first match and won by forfeit in his second match.
In the Brookings dual, the Kernels lost five matches by fall and were down 21-0 after the first five matches before Parr’s pin put Mitchell on the board.
The Chamberlain dual went a lot different for the Kernels as they won 10 of the 14 matches, five of the 10 wins came by fall.
“We got our second dual win of the year, and that’s great for our kids,” Carpenter said. “I am happy we got a win, but we are still sloppy. We’ve got to turn the corner and we’ve got to be crisper in the things we do.”
Mitchell hits the mat again Saturday at the Brookings Invitational in Brookings.
