Catching up: Freeman native Herrboldt scores 16 in overtime victory for Briar Cliff

Freeman graduate Paige Herrboldt scored 16 points for Briar Cliff in an overtime victory over Hastings College in Great Plains Athletic Conference women’s basketball game in Sioux City, Iowa, Saturday.

Herrboldt, a true freshman for the Chargers, was 6-for-7 from the field and added four rebounds in the 79-70 win.

Briar Cliff (17-4, 8-3 GPAC) is currently ranked No. 5 in the NAIA and plays at home Saturday against Dordt College, which beat the Chargers in conference action earlier this season.

n Mitchell natives Andee Budahl and Trina Young helped the South Dakota State swim team to a 171-117 victory over Division II St. Cloud State University Saturday at the HPER Center Pool in Brookings.

Budahl, a junior for the Jackrabbits, took three races on the day. In the 1,000-yard freestyle, Budahl won with a time of 10:38.62. In the 500-yard freestyle, she finished first with a time of 5:14.10 and closed out the day by winning the 400-yard individual medley in 4:40.98.

Young, a sophomore, finished just shy of first place in the 200-yard butterfly. Young finished the race in 2:13.85, just behind teammate Emma Wright, who won the event in 2:13.48.

The Jacks have two home meets left this season, with the first against Iowa Central Community College at the HPER Center Pool Feb.1. On Feb. 2, the Jackrabbits host the University of North Dakota.

n Nebraska sophomore wrestler Robert Kokesh won an 8-3 major decision at 174 pounds in Nebraska’s upset of No. 5 Illinois Friday.

Kokesh, a Wagner native, is ranked No. 4 in the 174-pound weight class and has won 20 in a row for the Huskers. The former Red Raider is 25-1 on the season and 11-1 in duals. This was the sixth consecutive victory over a ranked opponent for Kokesh.

With the upset, the Huskers improve to 9-3 on the season and return to action Sunday, when they travel to University Park, Pa., to take on yet another ranked opponent in No. 1 Penn State. The dual will start at 1 p.m. and will be available on the Big Ten Network.

n Mitchell native Jordan Miller averaged 11.5 points, six assists and three steals per game last weekend in two wins for Southwest Minnesota State University. The Mustangs defeated Northern State 62-61 in the first game of the weekend and took down Minnesota State-Moorhead 86-82 in overtime.

SMSU is back in action Friday when they take on Upper Iowa in Marshall, Minn.

n Former Mitchell Kernel Caitlin Way placed third in the women’s weight throw at the Wildcat Invitational in Manhattan, Kan., on Saturday.

Way finished with a throw of 17.79m/58-4.50. Way and OSU are back in action Saturday, when they travel to Fayetteville, Ark., for the Razorback Invitational hosted by the University of Arkansas.
