WATERTOWN — Audra Rew is happy about where her team stands at this point in the season.
The Mitchell Kernels gymnastics team finished in third place with a 140.825 at the Watertown Invitational Saturday in Watertown. Mitchell finished behind Class A’s Deuel (146.1) and Watertown (141.25).
“We were happy that we were right on (Watertown’s) heels,” Mitchell coach Rew said. “I feel very strongly that we’re going to come back and keep scoring higher. But at some point, they’re going to start taking the inconsistent things out and score higher too.
“Our goal is to compete with perfection and be positive so we can be ready, and hopefully on that given day, beat Watertown.”
Mitchell’s Quinci Herll posted her best all-around score of the season with a 36.875 for third place, beating all other Class A gymnasts. Deuel’s Sam Wiekamp (37.925) and Meaghan Sievers (37.75) took first and second. Mitchell’s Ellie Rew tied for eighth with a 37.775.
The Kernels’ next meet is Thursday when they compete against Brookings and Madison at 6:30 p.m. in Brookings.
NOTES: The reigning Class A champion Rapid City Central competed a full and healthy team for the first time this sesaon this weekend in Rapid City and scored a 148.6.
