Area high school basketball roundup 1/21/13: SC/W girls lose to Warner

FORESTBURG — Ashley Rozell scored 31 points to lead the Warner Monarchs to a 48-35 win over Sanborn Central/Woonsocket in high school girls’ basketball Saturday.

SC/W was 15-of 54 from the field and 6-of-17 from the free-throw line en route to losing its first game of the season.

Myah Selland scored a team-high 14 points for the Blackhawks, who committed 26 turnovers. Marissa Weber and Shelby Selland led SC/W in rebounds with six apiece.

Weber also tallied six points, three steals and two assists in the loss.

The Blackhawks (9-1) play Hanson today in Alexandria.

White River 35, Colome 22

COLOME — Dusti Good Shield scored nine points and four rebounds as White River defeated Colome 35-22 in the Southern Plains Conference tournament Saturday in Colome.

Casey Fairbanks had seven points and four rebounds and Ashlyn Plooster added six points.

Lauren Week led Colome in scoring with six points. Tara Farley had a team-high five rebounds and Tracy Routh doled out five assists.

Colome (1-11) plays Platte-Geddes Friday in Platte.

Lyman 61, Kadoka Area 53

COLOME — Three Lyman girls’ basketball players scored in double figures to help lead the Raiders to a 61-53 victory over Kadoka Area Saturday during the Southern Plains Conference tournament in Colome.

Ryan Gray led Lyman with 17 points and Bailey Almond chipped in with 12.

Kadoka was led by Katie Lensegrav, who scored 16 points, and Taylor Merchen added 10.

Lyman (4-6) plays Highmore-Harrold Thursday in Highmore.

Gregory 37, Stanley County 32

COLOME — Sierra Thomas scored 15 points and grabbed five rebounds to help Gregory defeat Stanley County 37-32 at Southern Plains Conference tournament Saturday in Colome.

Breana Weber scored eight points and brought down nine rebounds, while Courtney Opbroek grabbed a game-high 11 boards and scored five points.

Bailey Tibbs led Stanley County with a game-high 16 points.

Gregory (1-9) plays Tripp-Delmont/Armour Tuesday in Armour.

Jones County 56, South Central 28

COLOME — Two Jones County girls’ basketball players scored in double figures to help Jones County defeat South Central 56-28 at the Southern Plains Conference tournament Saturday in Colome.

Madison Mathews finished with a team-high 16 points, Becky Bryan added 14 and Rachel Buxcel chipped in with nine.

Ashley Green was the lone South Central player to score in double figures. The senior finished with 17 points as the cougars fell to 6-6 on the season.

South Central plays at Avon Tuesday.

Freeman 61, Saint Francis Indian 52

FREEMAN — The Freeman girls’ basketball team earned its eighth win of the season Saturday in Freeman.

The Flyers shot 38 percent from the field and grabbed 36 rebounds en route to defeating Saint Francis Indian 61-52 in overtime.

Three Freeman players scored in double figures. Dina Soulek finished with a game-high 23 points and grabbed eight rebounds and Nicole Saarie and Erika Sage each scored 11 points.

Freeman (8-4) plays McCook Central/Montrose today in Salem.

Boys’ basketball

Howard 45, Menno 43

MENNO — Steve Larson scored 17 points to help lead Howard to a 45-43 victory over Menno.

The Tigers shot 27 percent from the field and went 8-of-38 from behind the three-point line.

Cal Wiese finished with 12 points and was the only other Howard player to score in double figures.

Andrew Schwader grabbed 10 boards for the Tigers, who outrebounded Menno 31-21.

Austin Herrboldt led Menno in scoring with a game-high 18 points, while Dylan Lehr brought down 10 rebounds.

Howard (5-7) plays at Parker Tuesday. Menno (2-7) takes on Gayville/Volin in Gayville.

Saint Francis Indian 81, Freeman 75

FREEMAN — Trevor Brave recorded a double-double to help lead Saint Francis Indian to an 81-75 overtime victory over Freeman Saturday in Freeman.

Brave scored 18 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. James Henry II led all scorers with 28 points, while Leon Bad heart added 13.

Three Freeman boys scored in double-figures.

Shaun Becker led Freeman in scoring with 22 points, while Cole Paulson had 19 and Caleb Lang chipped in with 10.

Becker also brought down eight rebounds and had three steals and four assists.

Freeman (6-3) plays McCook Central/Montrose Tuesday in Montrose.
