Larson picks up victory in Mitchell's loss to Governors

PIERRE — The Mitchell wrestling team fell to the defending Class A state champion Pierre Friday.

The Governors won 12 of the 14 matches.

“Pierre showed why they are number one in the state and, they have a very solid lineup,” Mitchell head coach Travis Carpenter said. “They kind of took it to us.”

Mitchell won one match by forfeit, which was claimed by Trey Hohn at 120 pounds. The lone mat victory for the Kernels came from Matt Larson, who won a 5-3 decision over Pierre’s A.J. Dorschner at 145 pounds.

“Larson got a big win for us (tonight),” Carpenter said. “I am also really pleased with Ethan Parr. He got a decision against a state champion.”

Parr, a sophomore, lost a 5-1 decision to Caleb Stoltenburg.

Carpenter also had praise for heavyweight Robert McCardle, who lost a in a decision to Pierre’s Dylan Bennett, who placed sixth at last year’s state tournament.
