LETTER: Tasers, nets, exterior doors alternatives to guns in schools

School and college shooters sometimes have been shown to be of increased intelligence. So knowing there is probably only one guard (unless in some states, teachers are armed also), they will plan accordingly. Even a locked door has been shown not to be the answer when one can shoot out a window. The shooter has surprise on his side, also, so mayhem is going to occur anyway.

Therefore, I concur with many proposals already being talked about in addition to armed guards. I would suggest adding the following: Modify existing school buildings so students can pass through an opening in every room to an adjacent room. This could be done in new school construction. Each exterior room also could have a locked, solid exit door to the outdoors. Administrative offices could have the technology to turn off lights remotely for each area in the building.

Rooms with exterior lighting could have darkening shades that can be lowered by a teacher’s remote. Over all doors, have a net with very close mesh that can be dropped with a remote by the teacher or support staff.

Give guards and others as considered necessary Tasers in schools that do not use armed teachers or guards. Coiled bull whips under their clothes or in backpacks could be possessed. Always have the teacher’s desk in close proximity to the classroom doors so they can be slid in front of the door. Desks would be lined up behind it to the opposing wall requiring much force for entry. Schools could have acoustic weapons similar to the military and police forces, once they are more available and less costly.
