Waddell sets state record for Mitchell Aquatic Club

Mitchell Aquatic Club’s Tevyn Waddell broke her own state record in the 100-meter backstroke with a time of 57.78 seconds over the weekend at the Midwest All-Stars swim meet in Lawrence, Kan.

The previous record for her age group, set in November, was 57.81.

Waddell finished second overall in the event, which included swimmers from Kansas, Iowa, Colorado, Nebraska, South Dakota and Missouri.

The 14-year-old swimmer also broke team records in the 13-14 girls’ age group’s 500-meter freestyle and 400 individual medley en route to fifth- and eighth-place overall finishes, respectively.

“Tevyn thrives in this kind of meet environment,” Mitchell Aquatic Club coach Kyle Margheim said. “She had a tough event schedule and really rose to the occasion. To place top 10 in all her events is a great accomplishment, and then to break her record was icing on the cake.”

Wadell was not the only Mitchell Aquatic Club member to break records.

Ethan Huber, who competed in the 11-12 boys’ age group, broke team records in the 100-meter backstroke and 200-meter individual medley.

“Ethan’s performance was great,” Margheim said. “To be breaking team records as an 11-year-old for the 11-12 age group just shows what a focused and talented individual he is. It will be exciting to watch him continue to grow and improve, because I think there is a lot of potential there.”

Cailey Scott and Tessa Bitterman were the other two Mitchell swimmers who competed in the event. Scott’s best finish was in the 500 freestyle, which she finished 21st in the 11-12 girls’ age group.

Bitterman, who swam in four events, and posted her highest finish in the 100 backstroke. She finished 24th in the girls’ 13-14 age group.

“I was very pleased with the kids overall. All the kids had at least two lifetime best times,” Margheim said. “We are midseason and coming off a really tough couple of weeks at practice.”

The MAC swimmers will be competing this weekend at meets in Cedar Falls, Iowa, Watertown and Grand Forks, ND.
