Mitchell man gets jail for role in car fire

A 21-year-old Mitchell man was sentenced Tuesday to 90 days in jail and three years on probation for his role in intentionally burning a stolen car.

Matthew Hart pleaded no contest Dec. 4 to one count of accessory to a felony for helping his 22-year-old brother Jeremiah Hart, of Huron, and 18-year-old Patrick Red Legs allegedly start a stolen car on fire Sept. 9 in the 900 block of West Second Avenue in Mitchell.

Hart received a suspended two-year prison sentence and put on probation for three years. He was given credit for 22 days he spent in jail and ordered to serve another eight days on four consecutive weekends, starting this coming weekend. Hart’s remaining jail time will be served starting with 15 days on July 1, then 15 days on Jan 1, 2014, 15 days on July 1, 2014, and the final 15 days on Jan. 1, 2015.

Hart was also ordered to write a letter of apology to the victim and pay joint restitution in an amount yet to be determined.
