Area high school basketball roundup 1/15/13: Nightingale scores 1,000th point

PLANKINTON — Maria Nightingale scored her 1,000th point in Kimball/White Lake’s 50-34 victory over Mount Vernon/Plankinton in a high school girls’ basketball game Monday.

PLANKINTON — Maria Nightingale scored her 1,000th point in Kimball/White Lake’s 50-34 victory over Mount Vernon/Plankinton in a high school girls’ basketball game Monday.

Nightingale recorded 14 points, 10 rebounds and five steals in the win. Hailey Mohnen had 16 points and seven assists and Jazmyn Hinker scored 13 points. The WiLdKats were 20-of-61 from the field and 5-of-12 from the line.

Kallyn Prangley scored eight points for the Titans, who were 15-of-49 from the field and 2-of-11 from the line. The Titans won the JV game 29-26.

Kimball/White Lake (8-3) plays Chamberlain Monday, while Mount Vernon/Plankinton (1-11) plays Tripp-Delmont/Armour Thursday.

Ethan 52, Menno 43

ETHAN — Three players scored in double figures for the Ethan girls’ basketball team as it went on to defeat Menno 52-43 Monday in Ethan.

Ethan’s Whitney Endres led all players in scoring with 18 points, Darbi Gustafson had 17 points and a team-high nine rebounds and Rachel Hawkins added nine points, seven rebounds and four steals. The Rustlers were 16-of-41 from the field, 18-of-33 from the free-throw line and had eight turnovers.

Menno was led in scoring by Abby Herrboldt with 14 points. Kylee Kessler had 11 points and 12 rebounds for a double-double and Ashton Diede added nine points in the loss. Courtney Schaffer brought down eight rebounds.

The Wolves were 14-of-33 from the field, 10-of-14 from the free-throw line and committed 19 turnovers.

Ethan (6-2) plays Corsica/Stickney Friday in Stickney, while Menno (2-7) hosts Centerville today.

Highmore-Harrold 73, Wessington Springs 31

HURON — Courtney Keller led all players with 18 points to help Highmore-Harrold to a 73-31 win over Wessington Springs in the 281 Conference tournament Monday.

Wessington Springs was led by Sheyanne Brodkorb with 12 points and Cassidy Musick brought down seven rebounds in the loss.

Wessington Springs (4-6) and Highmore-Harrold (10-1) play in the second round of the 281 tournament Thursday.

HURON — Sanborn Central/Woonsocket had three players score in double figures to beat James Valley Christian in the 281 Conference tournament Monday in Huron.

Shelby Selland scored a game-high 29 points and had 10 rebounds for a double-double, Rachel Selland had 18 points and five rebounds and Rachelle Moore scored 10 points.

JVC was led by Jaclyn Logan with 12 points. JVC was 17-of-45 from the field.

JVC (6-4) and the Blackhawks (8-0) play in the 281 tournament Thursday.

Hanson 77, Howard 47

ALEXANDRIA — The Hanson girls’ basketball team defeated Howard 77-47 Monday.

Cassidy Graham had 14 points and seven rebounds, Kynedi Cheeseman scored 13 and Kelli Wenande added 12 in the win. The Beavers, who won the JV game, were 29-of-55 from the field and 15-of-18 from the line.

Howard was led by Taylor Noid with 12 points. The Tigers were 19-of-54 from the field.

Hanson (11-1) hosts Canistota Friday, while Howard (1-9) hosts Bridgewater/Emery Thursday.

LAKE ANDES — Kelli Batterman scored a game-high 26 points for Tripp-Delmont/Armour, which lost to Andes Central 47-42 Monday.

Hannah Just scored 11 points for TDA, which shot 35 percent from the field.

The Eagles were led by Krista Winckler, who scored 12 points and brought down 10 rebounds for a double-double. Kellie Winckler added 11 points for the Eagles, who shot 37 percent from the field.

The Eagles (5-2) play Mount Vernon/Plankinton Thursday, while TDA (0-12) plays at Avon Thursday.

Boys’ basketball

Bon Homme 63, Winner 56

TYNDALL — Mike Mesman led all players with 24 points and helped lift the Bon Homme boys’ basketball team over Winner 63-56 Monday.

Jon Barret and Scott Van Winkle scored eight points apiece. Barret brought down seven rebounds in the win. The Cavaliers shot 55 percent from the field and 63 percent from the free-throw line.

Winner’s Brendan Harter scored 17 points. Tanner Fritz and Sam Naazs each added 11 points for the Warriors. Winner won the JV game 43-35.

Bon Homme (3-6) hosts Tripp-Delmont/Armour today in Tyndall, Winner (4-5) plays at Wagner Thursday.

PARKSTON — Spencer Lucas and Zach Scott had 19 points apiece to lead Parkston over Andes Central 88-52 Monday in Parkston.

Jalen Hurley scored 16 points and had a team-high eight rebounds and Tanner Weber added 14 in the win. The Trojans shot 47 percent from the field and 72 percent from the free-throw line.

Neulan Dion led Andes Central with 15 points. Aaron Swanson scored 14 points. Darrin Hopkins brought down a team-best eight rebounds. The Eagles shot 35 percent from the field and 22 percent from the line.

Parkston won the JV game 33-10.

The Trojans (6-4) host Bon Homme Thursday, while Andes Central (2-5) plays at Colome today.

FREEMAN — Dina Soulek scored a game-high 19 points to lead Freeman over Viborg-Hurley 47-46.

Freeman was 13-of-51 from the field and 60 percent from the free-throw line.

Freeman improved to 6-4 and plays Menno Friday.

ETHAN — Blake Bartscher had 23 points to lead the Ethan boys’ basketball team to a 78-42 win over Menno Monday.

Ethan’s Colton Bierle had 21 points and Jace Connor had 14 points and nine rebounds. Brandon Andersen brought down a team-high 10 rebounds. The Rustlers, who won the JV game 38-16, were 30-of-62 from the field and 10-of-16 from the line.

Menno was led by Dylan Lehr with 11 points and Caleb Preszler scored 11 points and had eight rebounds. The Wolves shot 75 percent from the free-throw line.

Ethan (5-4) hosts Corsica/Stickney Thursday, while Menno (2-5) plays Freeman Thursday.

GREGORY — Dakota Votaw scored 18 points to lift South Central over Gregory 53-38 in a high school boys’ basketball game Monday.

Tyler Frank scored 12 points for South Central, which was 17-of-40 from the field.

Gregory’s Gavin Thomas had 13 points in the loss. The Gorillas were 13-of-43 from the field.

South Central (9-1) plays Lyman Thursday in Presho, while Gregory (3-4) plays at Chamberlain today.

MURDO — Philip beat the Colome boys’ basketball team 62-40 for third place at the Jones County Invitational Monday.

Brady London scored 13 points for Colome. Paul Temple brought down eight rebounds.
