The Marlin girls’ varsity team split games over the weekend.
In Saturday’s game at Sioux Falls, Haley Stahl scored a goal three minutes into overtime to lift the Marlins over the Flyers 4-3.
Stahl also recorded a hat trick in the game, scoring the final three goals for the Marlins.
Kayla Murtha scored the opening goal of the game to put Mitchell up 1-0, but a goal by Sioux Falls’ Robin Hatcher tied the game at 1-1. Stahl scored her first goal of the game, with an assist by Kayla Murtha, to lift the Marlins up 2-1 at the end of the first period.
With another goal by Stahl, Mitchell had a 3-1 lead heading into the final period. Flyer Hannah Mutschelknaus scored back-to-back goals in the third period to level the game at 3, sending it into overtime.
“I don’t know if we let down our guard but it’s not what you want to happen,” said Mitchell coach Randy Rezac, referring to the third period. “They gutted it out but had a tough time.”
Stahl’s final goal, with assists from Ashley Murtha and Bailey Hohn, secured the Marlins’ two straight win over Sioux Falls this season.
Mitchell outshot the Flyers 30-24 and goalie Hannah Spates made 27 saves in the game.
In the second game of the weekend against Oahe, the Marlins lost 2-1 Sunday at the Mitchell Activities Center.
Oahe’s McKenzie Grode scored the first goal of the game with an assist by Sara Bachand.
Kassi Barington tied the game with six minutes to play in the second period.
The Capitals got the go ahead goal late in the third period on a shot by Logan Gesinger, assisted by Megan Johnson and Emily Weber.
“We pulled our goalie with 51 seconds left, and we did everything we could but it didn’t work out,” said Rezac, whose team is 4-5-3 on the season.
Spates made 33 saves in the loss. Mitchell was outshot 35-14 in the game. Oahe goalie Tess Singleton made 13 saves in the win.
The Marlins are back in action against Huron at 7 p.m. Friday in Huron.
