Slow defensive start hurts DWU men in loss to Hastings

HASTINGS, Neb. — The Tigers were unable to recover from a slow start and fell to Hastings College 90-77 Sunday in Hastings, Neb.

“We really struggled on the defensive end,” DWU head coach Shane Murphy said. “It was a poor effort on our part.”

Hastings (16-5, 7-4 GPAC) got out to an early 9-0 lead to open the game and remained in control throughout the Great Plains Athletic Conference matchup. Hastings, which shot 58 percent from the field, built a 21-point lead at the half.

The Tigers (9-11, 4-7 GPAC) cut the deficit to 11 with 4:39 to play in the game but wouldn’t come any closer. DWU, which shot 45 percent from the field, was led by Jalen Voss with 19 points and seven rebounds. Aireus Stephenson scored 17 points, Luke Bamberg had 16 points and seven rebounds and Carde Pennington added 12 points in the loss.

Hastings’ Dane Bacon led all players with 22 points and Dylan Flinn scored 20.

The Tigers are back in action Wednesday when they host Dakota State University at 8 p.m. at the Corn Palace in Mitchell.

“We’re going to have to get back to practice with a desire to want to defend and buy into our defensive system,” Murphy said.
