WATERTOWN — The Mitchell Marlin boys’ varsity hockey team fell to Watertown 10-2 Sunday.

The Lakers (5-5) scored five goals in the first period. Mike Steska had a hat trick for Watertown.

Mitchell’s two goals came from Niko Arnold and Jacob Cersosimo with assists by Ben Hogan and Jordan Grosdidier. Both goals were in scored in the second period.

The Marlins (2-9) were outshot 47-21, and goalies Weston Gauger and Tate Sutherland earned time in the net. Gauger made 23 saves and allowed five goals, while Sutherland made 14 saves, giving up five goals.

SDSU men earn 83-57 victory over Mastodons

BROOKINGS — Nate Wolters scored 29 points and South Dakota State rolled past IPFW 83-57 on Saturday.

Wolters was 10 of 18 from the field for the Jackrabbits (13-6, 4-2 Summit), who shot 56 percent from the field — 73 percent after halftime when they outscored IPFW 49-26.

Marcus Heemstra and Chad White scored 12 points apiece for South Dakota State.

The Jackrabbits ran their home winning streak to 25 games. No. 7 Syracuse, which also won at home on Saturday, has won 34 in a row.

The Mastodons (8-11, 1-4) were led by Frank Gaines with 18 points. Joe Reed had 15 points and six rebounds for Fort Wayne.

Kansas City bench solid, defeats USD men 90-86

VERMILLION — Estan Tyler scored 25 points off the bench on a 10-of-13 shooting performance including five 3-pointers and Kansas City earned a 90-86 win over South Dakota on Saturday night.

The Kangaroos’ bench outscored South Dakota’s bench 57-9. Along with Estan, Thomas Staton scored 19 points off the bench for Kansas City (5-13, 2-4 Summit) and Nate Rogers added nine points including a perfect 6 for 6 from the free-throw line.

South Dakota (7-11, 3-3) led by as many as nine points in the second half but surrendered a 32-21 run to the Kangaroos.

Jacks beat the buzzer, top IPFW

FORT WAYNE, Ind. — Megan Waytashek’s basket at the buzzer gave the South Dakota State women’s basketball team a 66-64 victory over Fort Wayne Saturday.

The Jackrabbits (13-5, 5-0 Summit) trailed 63-54 with 3:49 left to play in the game, but baskets by Katie Lingle and Waytashek, SDSU fought back into the game. Ashley Eide’s 3-pointer with 34 seconds to play gave the Jackrabbits a 64-63 lead.

IPFW tied the game on a free throw before Waytashek made the bucket in the final second of the game, which was confirmed after a review.

Waytashek finished with a career-high 30 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.

UMKC tops Coyote women 60-56

VERMILLION — The University of Missouri-Kansas City defeated the University of South Dakota women’s basketball team 60-56 Saturday.

Polly Harrington led the Coyotes (7-10, 2-2 Summit) with 14 points and brought down six rebounds. Tempestt Wilson scored 13 points and Nicole Seekamp added nine points, seven rebounds and five assists in the loss.

The Kangaroos, who snapped an eight-game losing streak, led by as many as 18 points in the second half. UMKC was led by Eilise O’Connor with 14 points.
