Many changes due to inclement weather will be implemented for the Hanson Classic and Jerry Opbroek Invitational, which are both scheduled for today.
The Hanson Classic is still scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. at the Corn Palace in Mitchell, but Aberdeen Roncalli and Sisseton are not playing in the classic, Hanson girls’ head coach Jim Bridge said.
“We are planning to play as scheduled,” said Bridge, confirming seven or eight schools were already in Mitchell or on the way Friday afternoon.
The Mitchell area, like most of the state, experienced icy roads Friday, although no precipitation except a trace was recorded by the National Weather Service. There is a chance for snow today with continued cold and increasing winds.
Bridge said it is possible that two teams may match up that were not originally scheduled to play. Aberdeen Roncalli’s opponent,Wagner, will be in attendance and has yet to find out who its opponent will be.
The Jerry Opbroek Invitational will be without two Class A teams: Rapid City Stevens and Sturgis. The two schools canceled school Friday; therefore, by school policy, they cannot travel to participate in sporting events.
Here is a list of other events scheduled for Friday or today that were canceled or postponed at the time this edition of The Daily Republic went to press.
Friday’s events:
Boys’ basketball: Hanson vs. Mount Vernon/Plankinton in Mount Vernon, postponed; Scotland vs. Andes Central in Lake Andes, postponed; Canistota vs. Ethan in Ethan, postponed; Colome vs. White River in Murdo, postponed.
Girls’ basketball: Scotland vs. Andes Central in Lake Andes, postponed.
Hockey: Mitchell Marlins vs. Huron boys’ varsity hockey game, postponed.
Today’s events:
Wrestling: Dakota Wesleyan wrestling team at Hastings, Neb., postponed.
