Dakota Christian ends Eagles' run at 7

NEW HOLLAND — Brooklyn Vander Pol had 15 points, Sammie Delange had 10 and Dakota Christian handed Mitchell Christian its first loss of the year in a high school girls’ basketball game Thursday.

The Cadets defeated Mitchell Christian 44-40 to move to 6-3 on the season. Mitchell Christian was led by Emily Reynen, who had 14 points and six rebounds.

“Our game was just not on and our shooting was cold,” said Mitchell Christian coach Jackie Van Laecken, whose team won its first seven games of the year and is now 7-1. “We made a few mental mistakes. It just didn’t go our way.”

Mitchell Christian’s Alexa Van Laecken had five assists and five steals and Becca Glanzer had eight points and six rebounds. The Eagles had 11 turnovers to Dakota Christian’s 14.

Dakota Christian’s Amber Baan Hofman had a team-best seven rebounds and six steals. The Cadets were 15-of-38 from the field, 12-of-15 from the free-throw line and had 18 rebounds.

Coach Van Laecken said she is proud of the strong start her team has and is looking forward to the rest of the season.

“Wins are wonderful, but losses can be a good thing, too,” she said. “We can take it, learn from it and grow from it.”

Mitchell Christian plays Corsica/Stickney Monday in Stickney, while Dakota Christian plays at Freeman Academy today in Freeman.
