DWU JV team falls to Northwestern By The Daily Republic The Dakota Wesleyan University men’s JV basketball team lost to Northwestern 81-73 Thursday at the Wellness Center on the DWU campus. DWU’s Trae Bergh had 20 points, Kyle Mathis had 19 points and Lee Niewenhuis added 17 points. Thomas Geraets had 10 points for Wesleyan. DWU’s JV team is 3-4 and plays at Iowa Lakes Community College Monday Estherville, Iowa.

The Dakota Wesleyan University men’s JV basketball team lost to Northwestern 81-73 Thursday at the Wellness Center on the DWU campus.

DWU’s Trae Bergh had 20 points, Kyle Mathis had 19 points and Lee Niewenhuis added 17 points. Thomas Geraets had 10 points for Wesleyan.

SDSU’s Johnson sets mark in win over Oakland

South Dakota State women’s basketball coach Aaron Johnston became the program’s career leader in coaching victories Thursday night.

Johnston’s Jackrabbits defeated Summit League foe Oakland University 64-43 to give Johnston his 302nd career victory.

Two SDSU players reached double figures in scoring. Megan Waytashek and Ashley Eide scored 13 and 12 points respectively. Both players knocked down two 3-pointers.

SDSU is 12-5 overall and 4-0 in the Summit League. The Jacks hit the court again Saturday when they take on Fort Wayne on the road.

SDSU beats Oakland 81-74

BROOKINGS (AP) — Tony Fiegen scored 24 points and Jordan Dykstra had a double-double with 22 points and 13 rebounds to pace South Dakota State to an 81-74 victory over Oakland on Thursday night.

Dykstra scored eight key points in the final 10 minutes of the game to help South Dakota State (12-6, 3-2 Summit) pull away.

Nate Wolters scored 16 points and dished out nine assists for South Dakota State. Chad White scored 11 points, including three 3-pointers.

Wesleyan baseball team signs five

The Dakota Wesleyan University baseball team announced the signings of five players Tuesday.

Two players, William Lutjen and Zach Uttecht, will join the team in 2014 and three players Michael Johnson, Tyler Waddle and Joey Kinley are joining the school at the start of the spring semester this season.

Johnson is an outfielder who played on the Huron Legion team for three seasons as well as the Huron high school team. He comes to Wesleyan after a semester at Southeast Technical Institute.

After spending a semester at South Dakota State, Waddle joins the team after playing shortstop for Huron’s high school and Legion teams.

Kinley, a second baseman, had 43 putouts and a .282 batting average as a freshman at Minnesota West Community College. He comes to Wesleyan with sophomore eligibility.

Lutjen is a utility player from Miller Place, N.Y., where he batted .471 as a sophomore. Uttecht comes from Pierce, Neb., where he played high school baseball and batted .320 as a senior.
