Fourteen-year-olds Tessa Bitterman and Tevyn Wadell and 11-year-olds Ethan Huber and Cailey Scott, all of the Mitchell Aquatic Club, are joining other top swimmers from South Dakota to compete in the Midwest All-Stars Invitational Saturday and Sunday in Lawrence, Kan.
“They are all very talented to be going to a meet like this,” Mitchell Aquatic Club coach Kyle Margheim said. “They all work hard in practice and hopefully they will see some success this weekend.”
The quartet will swim for team South Dakota and face other 14-and-under swimmers from Colorado, Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas and Missouri.
“I am extremely proud of all of them,” Margheim said. “Whenever you can send swimmers to this type of regional event, it is a good thing for the entire club.”
To qualify, each swimmer must be ranked in the top five in the state in each event.
Huber and Scott will compete in the 11-12 group, while Bitterman and Wadell will swim in the 13-14. The other age bracket is the 9-10 group.
Scott will swim the 200- and 500-meter freestyle, the 50- and 100-meter backstroke, the 100-meter fly and the 200-meter individual medley.
Huber will swim the 100-, 200- and 500-meter freestyle, the 50- and 100-meter backstroke and the 200-meter individual medley.
“With Cailey and Ethan being 11 it will be tough, but overall we always tell them to focus on getting the best time they can,” Margheim said.
Waddell will swim the 100-, 200- and 500-meter freestyle, the 100- and 200-meter backstroke and the 400-meter individual medley.
“Tevyn has already broken three state records this year, so she has some big goals heading into Lawrence,” Margheim said.
Bitterman will swim the 500-meter freestyle, the 100- and 200-meter backstroke and the 100-meter butterfly.
“This is Tessa’s first year going and the last year she is eligible. I think she is set up to swim her best,” Margheim said.
