FORT PIERRE — On his final day as a member, Jeff Olson presided for the final time Thursday as chairman of the state Game, Fish and Parks Commission.
The Rapid City dentist in his last official act handed the gavel to Gann Valley rancher Susie Knippling moments after she was unanimously selected to be the new chairwoman.
“Congratulations and condolences,” he told her.
Olson will be succeeded on the commission by Gary Jensen. The Belle Fourche lawyer was appointed by Gov. Dennis Daugaard. Jensen plans to serve on the commission starting today with the second half of the two-day meeting. He eventually will need Senate confirmation.
Olson served on the commission for eight years, the maximum allowed under state law. He said he won’t miss some of the experiences, such as talking about mountain lions nearly everywhere he went during those eight years.
