LETCHER — Within every undefeated team, there is a leader.

And for the Blackhawks, it’s senior Nick Miller.

Last season, Sanborn Central/Woonsocket went on a 5-0 run before losing in the district semifinals.

“We were playing with such confidence at the end of last year and we wanted to carry that over,” Sanborn Central/Woonsocket co-head coach Rod Weber said. “(Miller) has always been one to lead his team in the offseason and get the other players involved in the gym. He’s really pushed to make our team better overall by doing those things.”

Miller’s will to work has certainly paid off, leading the Blackhawks to a 6-0 start this season.

“We were getting used to playing together last year,” Miller said about the first year of the co-op. “Now, we have that brotherhood and our goal is to be perfect, and so far, so good.”

Last week, the 6-foot-1 guard/forward recorded a game-high 18 points and eight rebounds in Sanborn Central/Woonsocket’s 62-48 win over Andes Central. Miller also scored a game-high 23 points, in a 58-55 victory over Mount Vernon/Plankinton Saturday.

For his efforts, Miller has been named The Daily Republic’s athlete of the week, an award voted on by the newspaper’s sports staff.

This season, Miller is averaging 20 points and 10 rebounds per game.

“We wouldn’t be winning these games if I didn’t have a great team,” Miller said. “I’m never one to take all of the credit. This is a team effort, and I’m lucky to play with these guys.”

Miller and the Blackhawks are back in action today as they host Kimball/White Lake at 6:30 p.m. in Woonsocket.
