Area high school basketball roundup 1/7/13: Hanson girls stay undefeated, top Avon

ALEXANDRIA — Kynedi Cheeseman scored 14 points to help lead the Hanson girls’ basketball team over Avon 53-47 Saturday.

ALEXANDRIA — Kynedi Cheeseman scored 14 points to help lead the Hanson girls’ basketball team over Avon 53-47 Saturday.

Kendra Cheeseman added 10 points and six rebounds in the win. The Beavers, who also won the JV game, were 18-of-36 from the field, 14-of-28 from the free-throw line and had 20 turnovers.

Avon’s Ariana Oorlog led all players with 15 points. Chesney Nagel recorded 12 points and Amanda Reiff chipped in with 11 points.

The Pirates were 14-of-19 from the free-throw line and had 15 turnovers in the game.

Hanson (8-0) plays McCook Central/Montrose Tuesday in Salem, while Avon (3-4) plays Mount Vernon/Plankinton today at the Corn Palace in Mitchell.

Dakota Christian 64, Marion 46

NEW HOLLAND —Sammie De Lange and Brooklyn Vander Pol each recorded a double-double in Dakota Christian’s 64-46 victory over Marion in a high school girls’ basketball game Saturday.

De Lange scored a game-high 16 points and recorded 10 rebounds, while Vander Pol had 15 points and 10 rebounds.

Ahna Vander Pol had 15 points. The Cadets, who won the JV game 38-15, shot 46 percent from the field and brought down 39 rebounds.

Marion’s Kylie Hughes scored 19 points and Erica Schoenwald had five rebounds.

Dakota Christian (4-3) plays Tripp-Delmont/Armour today in Armour, while Marion (1-6) hosts Freeman Academy Tuesday.

Wagner 55, Corsica/Stickney 40

WAGNER — Nicole Weber recorded a game-high 21 points in Wagner’s 55-40 win over Corsica/Stickney in high school girls’ basketball action Saturday.

Gina Soukup recorded 17 points and a game-high 10 rebounds for a double-double. Ali Kuca also brought down 10 rebounds in the win.

Corsica/Stickney was led by Jessica Hoogers, who had 17 points. Macayla Bamberg scored 12 points and had a team-best nine rebounds. Hope Menning had seven rebounds and seven steals.

Wagner (5-4) hosts Gregory Tuesday, while Corsica/Stickney (3-5) plays Platte-Geddes today in Platte.

Winner 79, Gregory 43

WINNER — Tawny Sherman scored 29 points in Winner’s 79-43 victory over Gregory in a high school girls’ basketball game Saturday.

Sherman brought down seven rebounds in the win and Cassidy Hanson had 19 points and seven rebounds. The Warriors shot 42 percent from the field.

Gregory’s Briana Leber scored a team-high 15 points. The Gorillas shot 44 percent from the field.

Winner (4-4) plays at Valentine, Neb. Tuesday, while Gregory (0-6) plays at Wagner Tuesday.

Harrisburg 82, Platte-Geddes 28

HARRISBURG — The Platte-Geddes girls’ basketball team was defeated 82-28 by Harrisburg Saturday.

Harrisburg’s Danni Honner had 16 points, Morgan Beaner scored 14, Morgan Darner had 13 and Hailey Axtell added 13 in the win.

Harrisburg shot 42 percent from the field and 50 percent from the free-throw line.

Platte-Geddes’ Josie DeGroot recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Shelby Rabenberg had a team-best 11 points. Platte-Geddes shot 25 percent from the field and 50 percent from the free-throw line.

Harrisburg (8-1) plays West Central next, while Platte Geddes (5-2) plays Corsica/Stickney today.

Boys’ basketball

Colome 56, Lower Brule 48

MISSION — The Colome boys’ basketball team had three players score in double figures en route to beating Lower Brule 56-48 Saturday in the Rosebud Shootout.

Reed Harter and Cohl Ratermann each scored 19 points and Terrance Kinzer had 13. Lane Fawcett had a team-best 11 rebounds.

Lower Brule was led by Latrell LaRoche with 18 points.

Colome plays Lyman today.

Corsica/Stickney 53, Wagner 37

WAGNER — Adam Bormann had a team-high 12 points to lead the Corsica/Stickney boys’ basketball team to a 53-37 victory over Wagner Saturday.

Lane Thomas recorded 11 points in the win. The Jaguars were 21-of-41 from the field and 6-of-14 from the free-throw line.

Noah St. Pierre scored a game-high 15 points for Wagner. St. Pierre and Will Hollmann each had six rebounds. The Red Raiders shot 15-of-44 from the field and 4-of-8 from the free-throw line.

Corsica/Stickney (4-3) plays Mitchell Christian Tuesday in Mitchell, while Wagner (3-2) plays South Central Tuesday in Bonesteel.

Sanborn Central/Woonsocket 58, Mount Vernon/Plankinton 55

PLANKINTON — Nick Miller scored a game-high 21 points to help lead Sanborn Central/Woonsocket over Mount Vernon/Plankinton 58-55 Saturday.

Davion Brooks had 13 points and six rebounds and Todd Stekl added 10 points and six assists. The Blackhawks were 20-of-54 from the field and 14-of-17 from the free-throw line.

Deric Denning and Jared Long scored 20 points apiece for MVP. The Titans were 17-of-45 from the field and 16-of-22 from the free-throw line.

SCW (6-0) plays Kimball Tuesday, while MVP (3-3) plays Scotland today at the Corn Palace in Mitchell.

WINNER — Winner had three players score in double figures to lead it to a 75-40 win over Gregory Saturday.

Isiah Old Lodge recorded 24 points and nine rebounds, Ben Connot had 20 points, Tanner Fritz had 10 points. The Warriors were 25-of-64

Johnny Combs and Andrew Taggart scored nine points apiece for the Gorillas. Gregory shot 17-of-43 from the field.

Winner (4-3) plays Valentine, Neb. Tuesday, Gregory (2-3) plays Andes Central Tuesday.

Canistota 65, Freeman 53

FREEMAN — Jason VanWinkle recorded a double-double to help lift Canistota over Freeman 65-53 Saturday in Freeman.

VanWinkle had 23 points and 13 rebounds, both game highs. Alex Robertson recorded 19 points and seven rebounds and Cody Bunger scored 11 points in the win.

The Hawks shot 49 percent from the field and had 33 team rebounds.

Freeman was led by Caleb Lang, who had 18 points and 12 rebounds for a double-double. Jordan Rinehart tallied 13 points and Shaun Becker had 10 points.

Freeman shot 38 percent from the field and brought down 25 team rebounds.

Canistota (5-0) hosts Mitchell Christian today, while Freeman (2-2) hosts Parkston Tuesday.

Irene-Wakonda 43, Avon 31

AVON — The Avon boys’ basketball team lost to Irene-Wakonda Saturday in Avon.

Brandon Kocmich had a team-high 12 points and Logan Mudder scored 11 in the loss. Logan Powers brought down a game-high seven rebounds and Mudder grabbed six. The Pirates were 15-of-41 from the field and committed 15 turnovers.

Irene-Wakonda was led by Gabe King, who had 15 points in the win.

Avon hosts Scotland Thursday, while Irene-Wakonda (4-3) plays Alcester-Hudson Tuesday.

Sioux Valley 55, McCook Central/Montrose 40

VOLGA — Sioux Valley boys’ basketball team defeated McCook Central/Montrose 55-40 in the championship game of Big East Tournament Saturday in Volga.

MCM’s Brandon Reif had 12 points and Will Gottlob scored 10 points.

Sioux Valley improved to 6-2, while MCM dropped to 5-3 and plays at Flandreau Friday.

Sioux Valley led at halftime 23-11.
