Roger P. Scharffenberg, 65, of Bridgewater, died Saturday, Jan. 5, 2013, at his home.

He was born Jan. 2, 1948.

Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls with the family present one hour prior. Kinzley Funeral Home in Salem is assisting with the arrangements.

Roger P. Scharffenberg was born to Ernest and Mary ( Olinger) Scharffenberg in Mitchell. He grew up in Bridgewater, where he graduated from high school. He spent most of his life in Bridgewater and Mitchell, and on March 4, 2008, he married Janet Holle. They then made their home in Sioux Falls, until October when they moved back to Bridgewater.

During his life, Roger was an avid sports fan and often traveled with his brother to sporting events. He also loved his two pet dogs, Princess and Opi , and spending time with family and friends. His step-son Benjamin always said Roger was the best step-dad he ever had. He was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls.

Roger is survived by his wife, Janet, of Bridgewater; two step-sons, Skyler (Shirley Monroe) Bode of Highland Park, N.J. and Benjamin Bode of Omaha, Neb.; one step-daughter, Holle (Loren) Andersen of Oak Park, Ill.; three step-grandchildren, Avery, Luca and Martin; one brother, Randy, of Yankton; two sisters, Jean (George) Conroy of Mitchell, and Linda (Bob) Moore of Marshalltown, Iowa; and two nephews, Jeffery ( Joellen) Hanzlik of Mason City, Iowa and Michael Hanzlik of St. Paul, Minn.
