OUR VIEW: Week in review: The best and worst
From business growth to slaking the drought to NFL success.By: Editorial board, The Daily Republic
CHEERS to the business growth experienced by the city in the past year. A Daily Republic report published Friday noted how a record $31 million in projects received city building permits in 2012.
Although some of that could be attributed to repairs from the hailstorm that hit in May, it still points to great development in the city.
Several businesses built new or underwent major renovation in 2012, and that’s a good sign of health in our business community. We hope the same can be said a year from now.
HISSES to news that recent snows really are only a drop in the proverbial bucket in terms of easing drought woes in the region.
We knew that the snowstorm was rather scant and dry, but we had no idea how insignificant it really was — that is, until we published a story that quoted weather experts as saying it may take hundreds of inches of snow to get the region out of drought and back toward what is considered normal.
CHEERS to the success of the region’s favorite NFL teams.
Around here, the Vikings are the general favorite and fans were rewarded this year with the team’s against-the-odds run to the playoffs. In addition to the Vikings’ success in 2012, the Packers and Broncos — the other two top-favored teams in this region — also earned spots in the NFL playoffs. It’s been a fun season.
